It’s not an accident or a mistake that Illinois police shot security guard #JemelRoberson, who risked his life to protect others as he apprehended a drunk, violent gunman. It’s systemic racism.

Black, indigenous, people of color die/get shot when white people ignore, deny or are blind to our racial bias. It takes continuous work to uncover the ugly pockets of racism we have all internalized and begin to dismantle our white supremacist conditioning. No one is exempt, no one’s work is done. No one is innocent when so many black men are shot in this way. Police departments must be held accountable and we must each hold ourselves accountable to take action to stop the bloodshed and terrorism of white supremacy culture.
